Chapter Fourteen

That evening I spent the night at Eric’s place. Not having slept well the prior evening—in Raleigh-Durham—I retired early to the guest bedroom. We’d planned on leaving early for FSU, and I needed the rest.

The first-floor bedroom was apart from Eric but the last few days had me so weary I didn’t care where I slept. I tucked myself into the comfortable bed linen and fell fast asleep.

In the middle of the night—or early morning—I awoke to find Eric lying beside me. I touched his shoulder but he didn’t move—only snored. I found it endearing that he left his room and came to me. I cuddled closer to him and took note of the nightlight he switched on. “I love you,” I muttered to his back.

A vacuum cleaner tore me from my slumber. I patted the empty bed beside me “Eric? I sat up, rubbed my eyes, and shielded them from the sun gleaming through the strips in the blinds. I checked the nightstand’s clock. “Ten!” I kicked the sheets back. “Shit, I guess I slept in.” I jumped out of bed and went to the room’s attached bathroom.

When I came out, Eric walked in carrying a silver tray. A delectable aroma of bacon and other accompaniments wafted my way.

“Good morning, sleepy head,” he said. “I’ve got some goodness for you.”

“Oh my god.” I went to the bed and sat down on the foot of it. “It smells wonderful.”

“Get back in bed.” He nudged his nose, balancing the platter.

I scooted up to the head of the bed and got back under the covers. “I could get used to this.”

“I hope you like soft-boiled eggs.” He straddled the tray around my blanket-clad thighs.

“I do.” His kindness moved me. “You’re so sweet!”

“Ta da,” he lifted a metal cover to display a plate of crisp bacon, fruit, and toast. A glass of orange juice sat next to the egg in its holder. I took the utensils out from the linen and covered my lap with the napkin.

He poured dark coffee from an urn.

“This is heaven.” I took a piece of bacon and ate it. “Umm.”

He pulled out a chair by the nightstand, positioned it closer, and sat in it. “All that, I can cook.”

“You can more than cook.” I sipped the coffee.

He wore a Coca-Cola T-shirt and grey sweatpants. “I’m glad you like.” He bent and attended to a loose lace on his sneakers.

“Did you hop into my bed last night?” I ate more bacon.

“Moi?” He came up from tying his shoe. “Are you sleeping with strange men on me?”

I chuckled. With the edge of my knife, I tapped the shell of the egg and removed its top. “You must’ve snuck down in the middle of night.”

He tapped the chair’s armrest with his fingers. “I didn’t have the heart to let you sleep all by yourself. So, after everyone went to bed, I moseyed on down.”

I dipped a strip of toast into the egg yolk. “I enjoyed cuddling with you.” I took a bite.
